How Many Dogs Are There? Practical Methods for Dog Population Estimation

13 April 2026

Description

Planning rabies vaccination campaigns often starts with a deceptively simple question: how many dogs are there?

Dog population estimates can help inform vaccination planning, resource needs, and programme monitoring for rabies control. But precise data are not always available, and programmes often need practical approaches that work with the information and resources they already have.

In this United Against Rabies Forum webinar, we will introduce the upcoming guidance document “Methodologies for Dog Population Estimation.” The session will explore several commonly used approaches and discuss when each method may be most useful.

Speakers include Dr Elly Hiby (International Companion Animal Management coalition), Ms Tamara Kartal (Four Paws), Dr Karma Rinzin (World Organisation for Animal Health), and Dr Maganga Sambo (Ifakara Health Institute).
